BRCA Rallycross National Round 5 Clanfield, The Off-Road Edition…

clanClanfield

We were reminded at drivers briefing that this was a off-road series due to the negativity towards the condition of the track which to be honest was not the best. A warm-up was run the week before and the drivers that attended that did say the track was a hundred times better.

Who was the money on this weekend?? Darren Bloomfield he is on a great run of form in the national series but after a disappointing Euros would he figure? Elliot Boots would be a contender after making the main final at the Euros is his luck changing?

clanElli0otBoots

The ever consistent Simon Willets who currently leads the title race is getting quicker and quicker and then you have current champion Neil Cragg who finished with a second place last time out at J12.

We also had a visitor from France for this event in the form of Jerome Sartel driving Xray could he have a shot???

To be honest Qualifying was quite boring well at least the battle for TQ it was…Darren had shaken off his blip at the Euros and returned in fine style to TQ all 3 rounds, Elliot Boots followed up in second in the 1st round and Neil Cragg 3rd, Neil would pip Elliot in round 2 so these 2 would battle out for the 2nd spot in round 3 with Neil coming out victorious as Elliot only managed 6th.Simon Willets was not having his best qualifying session and would pole the B with Craig Drescher also having a dodgy session by his standards just behind in the 2 spot and our French guest Jerome could only manage 10th in the B. I had my best qualifying at a national this year and ended up in the F final!!! Its the new colours and body I tell thee!

Ben Williams made his first national A final, well done!

Some notes from the pits; a few Kyosho drivers were running the electric body on their cars, Kevin Brunsden has moved to Durango to help develop the car which must be going quite well as he popped in the A final with a 3rd in round 3 of qualifying . The JConcept Punisher shell has started to appear and looks awesome. Tyres; most people were using the M2 Compound or equivalent.

So on to the finals, the lower finals were their usual entertaining affair with rugged battles going on Anthony Potter bumped from the F final to the C Final with some solid drives, Stewart Wilcox was a unlucky victim of a flameout due to a marshalling error in the C final when he looked certain to bump with a great drive.

Young Calum Niblett looks like he’s about to indulge in a spot of welding…

Drive of the day has to go to Richard Barton who flamed out at the start of the B final…he drove brilliantly to claw his way back up the field with some stunning overtaking moves and some downright ballistic laps to finish 3rd and bump into the main final.

clanPicture317

The Main Final was brilliant one of the best this season, Darren and Elliot would go at it from the start swapping places almost at every corner, I think the split after 18 laps was just a under a second. Meanwhile Willets had a mare of a start but was putting in some stonking laps and moving back up the field. First to retire was Jon Hazlewood who broke something on the rear of his car.

The battle was still raging on at the front between Darren and Elliot and Willets was still moving up through the pack, Elliot had a few bobbles and dropped back at this point Willets had got up into 3rd and was hunting the red Mugen of Elliot down. With Elliot having a slow pitstop this allowed Willets to catch up and get past…and that’s how it finished.
