Homestead in Miami hosted the event and 127 drivers had registered to compete for this highly prestigious title. The international elite of 1:8 on-road drivers were racing including nine- time World Champion Lamberto Collari, Dario Balestri and Daniele Ielasi from Italy, the Japanese top drivers Atsushi Hara, Takaaki Shimo and Keisuke Fukuda and the US stars Ralph Burch and Mike Swauger, whilst the current European Champion Robert Pietsch from Germany was one of the favourites.
In the final, everybody at the track was taken by the highly thrilling race. The spectators could see a tough battle on the 300m long track of the Homestead RC Raceway, but none of the top drivers managed to stand out. Choosing the right strategy proved to be of highest importance. Therefore, the real race for the title was decided late in the final. The lead changed several times and no driver was able to defend it for more than a few laps rounds. Pit stops for re-fuelling and to change tyres resulted in various position changes at the top of the field. The longer the race, the smaller the number of possible winners there were. One of them was Robert, keeping up with the top drivers for the whole race, despite the tough track layout.

The title was decided after more than 45 minutes of racing when Robert was in the lead ahead of Dario Balestri. The Italian driver came closer to the leader lap by lap, but Germany’s top driver kept cool and drove without making any mistakes. After 47 minutes of racing, it started to rain and the IFMAR rules are absolutely clear in this case: the race had to be aborted. Robert Pietsch had done 167 laps, one lap more than Keisuke Fukada from Japan and Dario Balestri from Italy. Consequently, Robert took the World Championship and the first ever for a German driver. Starting from the pole position, he had missed the win at the two previous WC events by a hair. Robert used a Sanwa Exzes X FHSS-3 2.4GHz radio, an LRP LiPo 2400 receiver pack and a LRP Quadra Pro 3 charger.
