The Belgian GP is held each year in early July at the beautiful outdoor Astroturf track in Kampanhout, Belgium. Club manager Willy Heremans and his crew always put on a relaxed, fun, yet competitive race. The track is inside a park and the GP is presented the same weekend as a big festival, so there is plenty of food and Saturday night features lots of loud music well into the night!
Privateer Wouter Wynen TQ’d the first three rounds of qualifying to take pole position for the A final. The 2WD qualifying and finals were held on Saturday with 4WD the following day. Wynen took Q1 by just 0.06 seconds from Grant Williams (Schumacher) and put in the only 12-lap run of Q2. In Q3 it was Kim Nielsen’s Team Durango chasing about a second behind Wouter’s X-6 Squared.
Wynen ran out to a good lead in A1, then made a series of small mistakes allowing Phil Sleigh (Associated) to catch up and make it close at the finish. In A2 it was Nielsen chasing Wouter and slowly catching up. They both got through for the bonus 12th lap, and on the last corner Kim made his move. Wouter closed the door and there was inevitable contact, putting Wouter on his roof! Nielsen showed great sportsmanship by waiting for the marshal to right the X-6 Squared, and allowed Wouter Wynen to cross the line first and wrap up the 2012 Belgian GP.
Wynen spoke after the race: “I have tried three different buggies this spring, and amazingly I found the X-6 Squared the fastest on both dirt and Astro. On dirt, the X-6 Squared makes more traction than any other car, rear motor or mid, and it’s outstanding on Astro. I won a BeNeLux race on dirt with it and now the GP on Astro. Easy to drive fast and consistent.”
X Factory spokesman Chazz said: “Wouter is a very talented driver with lots of experience. It’s not often a privateer can win a major race like the Belgian GP with so many factory drivers in attendance. We are pleased to say the Wouter has accepted our offer of a Team drive. Expect a press release with more details soon.”
