This season’s BRCA 1:10 Touring Car National Championship series concluded with a ‘winner takes all’ clash at the Mendip track near Weston-Super-Mare. Coming in to the final round, five drivers had a shot at the title – Chris Grainger led from Olly Jefferies with Elliott Harper, Colin Price and Andy Moore all in the hunt for the 2012 crown.
First blood went to Jefferies who TQ’d the first round of qualifying and he followed it up with the fastest time in round two and three and left the track on Saturday night with pole position for the A final secure in his pocket. Elsewhere Chris Grainger was struggling with grip roll on his Schumacher while Andy Moore was posting fast times but saving tyres for the three leg finals.
Two more rounds of qualifying on Sunday saw the Serpent of Chris Kerswell take second behind the Associated TC6.1 of Jefferies as Elliott Harper was next up for Tamiya with Andy Moore fourth and Colin Price completing the top five. For Grainger, day two continued where it left off on Saturday and the multiple UK champ would find himself out of the championship hunt before the finals even started as Chris would qualify in the B final and be a spectator as the title deciding finals got underway.
Leg one and Olly made a good start and despite pressure from Chris Kerswell and Andy Moore, he held on to take the first leg ahead of James Hart who started from tenth. Leg two and it was a nerve jangling five minutes for Jefferies as he was hounded by Andy Moore, but in the dying seconds of the second leg Andy would make a crucial error which took the pressure off Olly and he was able to cruise to the victory. The leg win gave Olly the meeting but more importantly the championship. Chris Kerswell who was quick all weekend was rewarded with second while Andy Moore completed the Mendip podium for Hot Bodies. In the series, it was the runner-up spot for Chris Grainger with Andy Moore third.
The 2012 championship had been the most competitive in many years and at the first four rounds there were four different winners. Olly was the only driver to win two Nationals and on his way to the title and took TQ at three of the five meetings.
