The penultimate round of this seasons BRCA 1:12 scale nationals took place at Maritime raceway in Kent last weekend. Good results for certain drivers could have meant that the championships were wrapped up with a round to go, but this proved not to be the case and now both championships go down to the wire.

On Saturday in the stock class Keith Robertson drove consistently on the unforgiving track to take TQ ahead of his Team Associated team mate Olly Jefferies with Elliot Harper third for CRC. In the A final, early mistakes from the Associated duo gifted Elliot the lead, prompting Olly to give chase while Keith attempted to recover. Elliot looked comfortable at the front until his car began to slow. It later emerged that his battery had false peaked, resulting in it not charging fully and dumping well short of the finish. This handed Olly the win, with Andy Griffiths second for V-Dezign and Keith recovering to complete the podium. Matthew Varah took an impressive fourth ahead of the V-Dezign of Mark Stiles, who passed Mark Green’s Serpent on the very last corner.

On Saturday it had become apparent that the link style cars were handling the somewhat strange track conditions significantly better than their T-bar counterparts. This prompted most of the V-Dezign team to build link cars to run in open modified.

Olly continued from where he left off on Saturday by taking TQ ahead of Elliot Harper. These two were clearly the class of the field, with Keith Robertson having another good run to take third in qualifying. For the first time, LiPo powered link cars had locked out the top three in qualifying; a sign of changing times perhaps? The final was a very one sided affair, with Olly running out the comfortable winner by half a lap. Keith Robertson had a much better final run than on Saturday to finish second, while Andy Griffiths completed the podium. Chris Kerswell and Matthew Varah completed the top five.

Both BRCA national titles now go down to the last round at Chesterfield in March, before which the EFRA Euros are taking place in Hinckley. Racer will be on hand to report from both meetings, so stay tuned…
