At the weekend I attended my first ever Southern League Challenge Cup at Aldershot. It was the first outing for my new Team Magic E4RS in the 13.5 SuperStock class, so I didn’t have too higher expectations as I had not driven the car in a race meeting of any sort until the day.

In fact it was really the first proper shakedown of the car. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the Saturday practice session, so first practice was qualifying round 1. To my amazement, with no real setup except for a slight adjustment to the rear droop, the car was absolutely planted on the first run.

Also, thanks to fellow team member Marcus Askell’s advice on speed controller setup, the car was very quick. Marcus had given me advice on a ballpark figure to set the Tekin RS speed controller at for all its various settings. I need to invest in a hotwire to make changes to the settings as the car was a little bit underpowered on the straight, but generally was very quick.

Anyway, the car was so good during all qualifying rounds that it didn’t even end up on its roof once, so the great paint job was still in tact. I had dropped from an initial place that would have put me in the A-final to a spot in the B final by the end of qualifying. I was extremely happy with this for a first attempt and hoped that I could convert that to a podium place in the finals.

The finals got off to a great start into second place which I managed to maintain until the end of the first final. The car was starting to suffer in the heat as I had no fan on the motor and it was getting very warm, which was causing the performance to drop off towards the end of each round, however I managed to grab a fourth place in final 2 which gave me second overall in the B final. With four full finals A – D in the Super Stock class, I was extremely pleased with this result and it is a testament to what the car really has in it for the future.

I look forward to some great results with this car in 2010, very impressed with its handling and speed straight out of the box. I have to say the Tekin RS and Redline 13.5 motor also really impressed me. Here’s to a great 2010 with CometRC and Team Magic!!
