Losi 1:24 4×4 Trail Trekker

Whilst in Nuremberg at the annual Toy Fair, I spotted a small pick-up truck on the Horizon Hobby stand and ignoring everything else, I picked it up and snapped of a couple of shots which quickly hit the scaler forums and did the rounds. Not much was known about the truck and it soon transpired that its presence on the stand was a little premature.
I had to have one and bugged the guys at Horizon Hobby UK during an evening out that I wanted one. Imagine a small child whining all meal long in your ear you get the idea! The trip soon flew by and shortly after, an unassuming box arrived on my desk. Like a big kid at Christmas, I ripped the box apart to get to my new toy and there it was a small black box with Micro 4×4 emblazoned upon it and a picture of the new Trail Trekker on there as well – I was grinning from ear to ear.
I opened the box and poured the contents onto my desk to find the vehicle (including battery), transmitter, charger, instruction manual and AA batteries for the transmitter.

The battery in the car needs charging for no more than one hour, and the included charger has optional plugs to cater for markets around the world. What made me smile even more was the body colour was black, and it looks mean standing still with its almost scowling headlights and wrap around bumper and roll cage in the rear bed.

I quickly charged the battery and soon had the Trail Trekker climbing over my keyboard, phone and everything else I could find. I didn’t want to get it too dirty yet as the studio shots had to be rattled off. For some purists they may find that the Trekker is a little bit too fast, but for running around indoors its perfect as my cat found out much to its annoyance when I took it home for the weekend to “review” some more.

The front and rear axles are both locked and the drive system uses a worm gear system as found on Losi’s full-size crawler, so there is no need for complex drag brake systems.
The included transmitter is Losi’s own Spektrum-equipped 2.4GHz unit, which connects to the all in one receiver/speed controller. The servo uses a standard three-wire receiver connection that will be handy when it comes to fiddling with it in the future.

Being 1:24 scale, Losi has given you the choice to use many of the off the shelf plastic model kits for different body choices as they know this vehicle will be stripped down and rebuilt into scale trucks and I for one can’t wait to see the outcomes on the scale forums soon.

But for now im happy mucking around in my kitchen throwing down anything I can find and putting it in the Trail Trekkers path – you’ll be amazed how it climbs up the outside of an upturned wok! So whether your 80 or eight-years-old, this truck can really brighten up a dull rainy Saturday when your stuck indoors.

Look out for a full review in the magazine soon.
