Serpent driver Mark Stiles continued his strong start to the 2011/12 BRCA 1:12 National Championship by taking the win in the stock class at round two of the championship last weekend. Mark qualified in third place with his S120LT behind Olly Jefferies and three-time World Champion David Spashett. Chris Kerswell was fourth with the second Serpent chassis in the A final.
In the final, Olly got away cleanly ahead of Dave, with Chris passing Mark for third in the opening laps. A mistake from Dave moved the Serpent duo up to second and third and they then began to close down Olly at the front. At half race distance, the trio were together on the track and separated by less than two seconds. A small error from Chris allowed Mark to re-pass him for second and then Olly hit a track marker which promoted Mark into the lead. Chris and Olly then enjoyed a close battle for second that allowed Mark to pull a gap of about three seconds and cruise to a comfortable victory. Olly beat Chris to deny Serpent a one-two finish.

In Sunday’s modified class, Mark struggled with a speed controller problem in qualifying, but managed to salvage fourth place in the final. Chris qualified in seventh, but was forced to retire in the A final. The result leaves Mark leading the stock championship and in a tie for second in modified. Chris is further down the overall standings due to only having one good score in each class from the opening two events. Round three of the championship takes place in three weeks time.
