The fourth round of the BRCA Truggy and E-Buggy series took place at a new venue for the calendar at the Pembrey Race Circuit in South Wales. The RC track is on the site of the full-size version and despite being a relatively new venue, offered plenty of challenges for the drivers, who in the most part really enjoyed the track and its layout.
The track itself features some hard packed and loose sections, with Astro turf laid over the jumps to help keep them together, but it was the morning rain that was more of a concern. The weather was doing its best to put a downer on things, but the drivers remained in high spirits and were enjoying the track nonetheless.
Qualifying saw Darren Bloomfield take a commanding, yet hard fought TQ in E-buggy. Darren was pushed all the way by young Jonny Skidmore and Tony Truman, and there wasn’t a whole in it on outright lap time, just Darren’s better consistency keeping him clear until the last round when Darren went very quickly with a super run.
In the truggy class Jon Hazlewood was giving the prototype A215T its second outing and was right on the pace, indeed was on course to be TQ in two of the qualifying rounds until late race incidents blunted his charge. Still he qualified third overall and ready to challenge.
Into the afternoon and the weather began to clear up which allowed the track to start drying, giving the drivers something to think about tyre wise for the finals.
The truggy final saw Jon move into the lead after a few laps but then the sun came out and really starting drying the surface. This didn’t suit his tyre choice and he made a couple of errors while he adjusted to the lower traction available and he was out of contention. Tony Truman running a A8T was being steady and consistent, and he would go on to place third overall after a good drive. Jon ended in fourth.
The E-buggy final saw a great battle between Darren and Jonny Skidmore, Darren was quicker but not by much as the young charger hung on to the back of Darren and allowed him no rest. A late race mistake from Jonny as he pushed hard for the win dropped him back a little and this allowed Darren to go through to take the win and with it secure the overall Championship giving the A215e its first national title with one round remaining. Jonny finished second and he has all but secured second overall in the championship with yet another podium finish.
The final round of the series will be held at Slough in August.
