About the East African Safari Rally

One of the world’s most gruelling off-road races first started in 1953 to mark the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The race took place over 4 days, covering a distance of 6,200km running through the East African countryside of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Building on past Safari Rally success, Datsun entered the 1971 rally with four 240Z series cars. Throughout the race, the 240Z, which was powered by a 5-speed, straight-six, L24.OHC engine became very popular with the locals for its remarkable performance. After four hard-fought days, the No.11 240Z driven by Herrman and Schuller claimed victory against the formidable challenge of the Porsche, Peugeot, and Ford teams.
